Mission Trips
On January 14th, Dr. Schmidt set out on a 20 hour plane ride to Southern Thailand. Khoa Lak was the ultimate destination where he and a group from Maryland and California spent 4 days treating children at one of Thailand's Kings' schools. This is the fourth such trip Dr. Schmidt has participated in over the past 5 years. The non-profit that sponsors these missions is called Smiles on Wings. Some of these trips have been in Northern parts of the country, and some to more remote locations, but each usually centers around a school in the area. Dental services are supplied to the children of the school who would otherwise have very limited access to any dental care. The faculty and staff of the schools also benefit from the groups visits. Utilizing his skills and giving to those in need is one of Dr. Keith Schmidt's passions as a practicing dentist in the Towson area.
In March of this year Dr. Schmidt participated in a mission trip to South Africa. Through a non-profit called Medicine Arm and Arm Dr. Schmidt and 8 other dentists and 10 support staff, from across America and internationally, traveled to Dundee South Africa to provide needed dental services to poor children of the surrounding area. This is Dr. Schmidt’s sixth such trip in the past 9 years that has taken him to such places as Russia, Thailand, and of course this year South Africa. In cooperation with the Dundee Rotary club, Dr. Schmidt is a member of the Towsontowne Rotary club, the group spent 4 days in a nearby school auditorium treating 565 young people. Mostly oral surgery and basic restorative procedures were provided using mobile equipment purchased over the years using private donations and funds raised through Rotary. Several cases involving cosmetic procedures were also performed to restore a smile the child could be proud of.
This trip was a continuation of a passion Dr. Schmidt has to provide needed services to those around the world whom could otherwise not afford them or simply have no access. “I feel very blessed that my profession and skills allow me to give back while seeing parts of the world I may otherwise never be exposed.” After the clinic the group had the opportunity to participate in several days of safariing where they saw some of the amazing sights of the country, TONS OF ANIMALS!
To sum up the experience Dr. Schmidt simply says, “I would call it a trip of a lifetime except I have every intention of going back!”
