Drs. Schmidt and Shires Offer Occlusal Adjustment for TMJ
Get Jaw Pain Relief with an Occlusal Adjustment

If you have jaw pain and other TMJ symptoms because of a misaligned jaw, Dr. Keith Schmidt or Dr. Jay Shires may need to perform a bite alignment, or occlusal adjustment, as part of your treatment plan. A misaligned bite can put more pressure on certain teeth every time you bite down. If you have a habit of grinding your teeth, you may be at risk for wearing down your teeth and causing irreversible damage.

Whether you are diagnosed with TMJ or are experiencing discomfort and pain because of a misaligned bite, our doctors can perform an occlusal adjustment to remedy the situation and improve your oral health.

Our doctors have extensive experience treating TMJ and providing relief from jaw pain. If you are experiencing symptoms of TMJ or have a teeth grinding habit, come in for an oral evaluation. Schedule your appointment with Dr. Schmidt or Dr. Shires in Towson, MD today!

Options for Restoring the Bite

If you have uneven teeth or significant misalignment in the upper or lower jaw, Dr. Schmidt and Dr. Shires may recommend orthodontics as part of your TMJ treatment plan. Orthodontic treatments can realign the positioning of the jaw and teeth so that they come together at the proper anatomical locations. Invisalign® is a very popular option available at our practice.

Other options for basic and more complex cases related to the bite might include:

How an Occlusal Adjustment Is Performed

In many cases, we can provide relief from jaw pain by reshaping the chewing surfaces of certain teeth so that you are no longer putting extra pressure on these parts of the mouth when chewing and biting down on food. An occlusal adjustment will help to evenly distribute the bite and improve the relationship between the teeth, jaw muscles, and temporomandibular joints.

An occlusal adjustment is a painless procedure where we can record the bite using digital technology and mark exactly where teeth need to be filed down or reshaped. It is an important part of many TMJ treatment plans. A number of complex cases related to the bite can be corrected with an occlusal adjustment.
